The title track from The Forresters ‘Something to Give’ album will be released as a single on the 9th of September!
I’ve been awarded a residency at Bundanon. I’ll be spending a couple of weeks in the Musician’s Cottage in August. I’ll be working on songs for an album and plan to do some filming using the beautiful setting of Bundanon and surrounding areas for related music clips and album artwork.
This is the first residency I’ve applied for and in all honesty, never considered it previously.
I spent some time at Bundanon as Madeleine’s carer in February 2022, just one month before she passed away. At the time we didn’t know if Madeleine would be able to attend her residency, thankfully I was allowed to accompany her and we had a productive and enjoyable time. I helped Madeleine complete her script for her Darlinghurst Eats Its Young film and did some rough recordings of her narrative. This residency will no doubt bring back some memories.
I’m looking forward to this time at Bundanon; the opportunity to work on my music, take a breath and enjoy that wonderful environment.
Bundanon’s Artists in Residence program supports new work, research and collaborations by professional artists and researchers from around the world. This multi-disciplinary residency program is the largest in Australia and provides artists time conceive and develop new work and ideas in the iconic Shoalhaven landscape.

…the last eighteen months have been a tough stretch. Losing someone close, someone you shared a life with is a difficult thing to deal with. I know some of you have been through similar situations and there’s no easy way to get through. But we do. Things get a little easier as time passes - but the loss stays with you.
I’m doing my best to get back to a ‘normal’ life. I’ve been writing songs, painting and doing fix ups around the house, did a videomaking course at AFTRS. I’m looking forward to some art openings and seeing some live music.
I’m recommencing shows at Home Gallery. First up is an exhibition of Madeleine’s work. The show will commemorate the first anniversary of her passing opening on Thursday the 16th of March. Join me for drinks from 6-8pm, 735 Bourke Street Redfern – hope to see you here! Cheers, Anthony
It’s with great sadness I inform you that my partner Madeleine Preston passed away yesterday.
Many of you would be aware, Madeleine suddenly became unwell in July last year. She was taken to St Vincent’s hospital in a critical condition and not expected to survive. After three weeks in hospital, mostly in intensive care, Madeleine came home.
Over these last few months, Madeleine battled a number of symptoms including fatigue, but was able to push through and make the most of her days. She painted, made ceramics and got to finish the script for her short film, Darlinghurst Eats its Young – recording her narration just two weeks before her death.
We managed to get away to the South Coast for a number of short trips. Mad loved the ocean, catching up with friends and was energized by swims in the salt water pools we visited.
She enjoyed engaging with other artists and writers during her residency at Bundanon in February. The natural peace of the beautiful surroundings raised her spirits.
Most of all, Mad loved the visits, calls and messages from her friends. Those connections were precious to her.
Madeleine’s stoic nature was with her right up until the end.
I will always be thankful that we had these last few months together, but that doesn’t make today any easier. I miss her, and I always will…

“…as a feeling of isolation extends across the country and musicians and artists are unable to perform, The Forresters ‘shine a bit of light’ with their sparkling, guitar-based sound. On the back of their debut album and EPs in 2016 & 2019, The Forresters’ follow-up LP ‘Something to Give’ is a joyful excursion into contemporary power pop…”
Thanks to Branko & Cam from 4ZZZ’s ‘Unnecessary Knowledge’ for previewing The Forresters upcoming single ‘Fall Back In’ out on the 15th of October on their program this morning. Just streaming the show now – in very good company with tracks by Scientists, Pavement, Tex Perkins and Big Star. You can have a listen here
For this clip of our version of Big Star’s ‘Thirteen’ I dragged my super 8 projector out of the attic and went through the family’s home movies. Birthday parties, pony rides, family trips to Queensland; life on the farm I grew up on in Leppington on the outskirts of Sydney. Memories of a fun, less complicated time.
I’ve also included some vintage photographs I purchased from the Chelsea St flea market in NY in July 2019. I’ve been collecting old forms of media for years - love the way photos from a particular period of time have a specific look. Guitars and bass by Matt Galvin, mixed by Mitch Easter and thanks Michael Carpenter for mastering the track and stitching all the visuals up…enjoy…
Here’s a brief tour of Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina taken when I was mixing tracks in July 2019.

…a couple of weeks ago I had a recording session with Michael Carpenter at his LoveHz studio in Leichhardt. Apart from mastering the upcoming Forresters’ record, we edited a few tracks and shot some footage for a new video clip. One of the tracks we edited is an old song for our debut album, ‘Missing You’. I’ve always liked this song but felt the original arrangement could have been tighter. The editing has focussed the song and Michael’s remastering has highlighted some the mid-range instruments making the new version more dynamic all round. The clip for ‘Missing You’ will comprise of three screens: one from this session, one using a series of photographs from the original clip, while the third is footage filmed during last years’ Mardi Gras. I walked around Darlinghurst with my iphone and gimbal, winding through the crowd while recording. The parade was staged a couple of weeks before Sydney went into its first lockdown. I’ve included a short segment of the clip with part of the track in this post. It’s strange watching this footage now; how relaxed and carefree people were, not realizing what was just around the corner…
…it’s been a while since I’ve posted about my music. I’ve recorded and mixed twenty-five songs with The Forresters over the last few years. We started recording at the now defunct Albert Studio and then Hercules Street studio with Wayne Connolly. We also had a number of sessions with Michael Carpenter at his LoveHz studio in Leichhardt. The project crystallised in July 2019 when I had the pleasure of mixing the tunes with Mitch Easter at his Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina.
I’m pleased to say that the first of The Forresters’ albums will be released on October 1. It’s an 11-track power pop record titled, ‘Something to Give’. The second of the two albums, which has a more ‘alt country’ feel, will be out in 2022.
I started the promo for this record before the Covid-19 restrictions kicked in during March last year. The week the restrictions started in Sydney we were scheduled to do a show that weekend and had a radio interview with Vinny Ramone on 2SER booked for the Thursday but by Wednesday, Sydney was madly stocking up on toilet paper.
Over the coming weeks I’ll be rebooting the promo for the record. We will be releasing a couple of singles, video clips and some live studio performances too. The album launch is booked at the Petersham Bowling Club in late October. Hope to see you there! Photo by Steve McLaren.
Big thanks to Nic Dalton from Half a Cow Records for sending me this copy of The Orange Humble Band single release from Spanish label, You Are The Cosmos. Highly recommended for all OHB and power pop fans! Here’s the link

…the sessions we did at Alberts back in late 2015 were some of the last at the iconic recording complex. They started dismantling the place around us while we were recording. A sad finale to a great studio with an amazing history – probably the site of a new block of apartments now.
I was rapt to have Wayne Connolly produce these tracks. Wayne mixed The Forresters’ debut album ‘Skindeep’ (all those years ago) at Velvet Sound studio in Pitt Street. We tracked 14 songs during our time at Alberts – a number of the tracks will be included on our upcoming LP. The album was supposed to be out this July but due to Covid I pushed it back till next year. Not sure if that was a good idea or not, probably an indication of how difficult this year has been – for all of us.
I had one rehearsal with the band and then we laid the tracks down over 2 days. Matt Galvin on guitar, Steve Balbi on bass and Nick Kennedy on drums were also the foundation on the first record. Also returning from the first album and adding their considerable input to this project were Cameron Bruce on keyboards, Jess Ciampa on percussion, Charlie Owen on guitar and dobro.
I was delighted to have Amanda Brown on violin and mandolin, Emma Swift via Nashville on vocals and Jason Walker on pedal steel join us on the record and great to have former Orange Humble band member Peter Kelly in to play trumpet on a number of tracks.
One of the songs from those sessions was our version of Tim Hardin’s folk classic, Never Too Far. The track was re-mixed by Mitch Easter at the Fidelitorium in NC and mastered at LoveHertz by Michael Carpenter. The video clip was created by visual artist and writer David Greenhalgh. The track is out this Friday the 25th on all online stores and streaming services. Hope you get a chance to check it out! abx
Our single ‘Never Too Far’ will be released on September the 25th on itunes, Spotify and all online stores and streaming services.

…just over twenty years ago, I spent a couple of months in Memphis recording the second Orange Humble album at Ardent studio. I had a great time working with some of my musical heroes including Jody Stephens, Mitch Easter, Ken Stringfellow, Spooner Oldham and the late and great Jim Dickinson.
I came across this single of ‘Don’t Lie To Me’ the other day that Jody gave me after our sessions. Jody is one of my favourite drummers of all time and a great guy. Pretty happy with the way the album turned out and a great time to boot…if you’d like to read a more in depth take on these recording sessions, you can check out the piece at the Orange Humble section of this website.

Finished mastering the last of the 25 songs for The Forresters albums yesterday with Michael Carpenter at his Love Hz Studios. I started writing these tunes in 2013. Recorded 14 songs with Wayne Connolly at Alberts in 2015 and the rest of the songs have come together bit by bit over the last two years with Wayne and Michael.
I’ve been very fortunate to have a fantastic group of musicians who have lovingly added to the essence of these songs and to top it off, the tracks were mixed by Mitch Easter.
I had a great day yesterday, just sitting there and listening.
It’s been a long and drawn out process but I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.
The first album will be released next April - a single is coming out on Spotify next Friday the 4th. I hope you all get a chance to hear the tunes. Cheers, Anthony
